The many uses of a mortgage rate calculator
When shopping for a loan, any type of loan, a mortgage rate calculator can be your new best friend. Although it is called a mortgage rate calculator, these tools are actually useful for any type of loan.
A mortgage rate calculator is a tool that allows you to enter the information you know and find out the information you dont know. For example, if you know how much you want to borrow, the length of the loan, and the payments you will pay, the calculator can tell you the actual interest rate you will be paying. On the other hand, if you know the interest rate, but are trying to decide between a three year and five year term, you can put the three year term in first, then the five year term, and compare the different payments you will have to pay.
The only thing you have to know to use a mortgage rate calculator is the following terms:
- interest rate sometimes called APR
- principal the amount you are borrowing
- term the length of the loan (ie. 1 year, 3 years, 5 years)
- amortization period the amount of time until the loan is paid off (for a mortgage, although the term may be 5 years, the amortization period may be 25 years, meaning it will take a total of 25 years to pay off the mortgage completely).
It is easy to find loan calculators online. Just visit the websites of mortgage lenders and you will find quick links to free calculators you can use whenever you want.
